You may have Hail or Wind damage and not even know it. Hail strikes most often are not visible from the ground and one has to get right up and close to see them. Hail marks will turn into holes in the shingles over several Months or couple of short years. Quite often the owner becomes aware of hail damage due to a leak or during a home inspection during a sales process or a home owner’s insurance inspection.
Hail strikes will shift the granular where hit and loosen or dislodge them from the tar. During the next extreme rain conditions more and more of the granular will be lost, exposing a bald spot. These bald spots most often by the hundreds or even thousands on a single home have now lost their granular protection against the sun. Sun exposure will start evaporating the tar in these spots revealing the reinforcing mat within the shingle. Sort of like a bald tire showing it’s reinforcing wire mesh once thin and bald. Soon after, water can penetrate these bald spots and leaks will start to surface. Hail Damage Deductibles are much lower than hurricane deductibles.
